Daan Oostdam (1997) is klassiek pianist en woont in Den Haag. In 2023 behaalde hij zijn masterdiploma aan het Conservatorium van Amsterdam, waar hij studeerde bij Frank Peters en Frank van de Laar. Hij heeft een grote liefde voor het romantische pianorepertoire: ‘Ik houd enorm van componisten zoals Medtner, Schumann en Ravel omdat ik gegrepen word door de lyrische expressiviteit en dramatiek die in hun muziek te vinden is’.
In januari 2025 verscheen zijn solo-debuutalbum ‘Idylle’ bij 7 Mountain records, gewijd aan de muziek van Nikolaj Medtner. De cd werd breed besproken in de geschreven pers en op de radio en geprezen als ‘een prachtig debuutalbum, kleurrijk en genuanceerd’, met ‘dynamische contrasten en romantische expressiviteit’. Recensenten beschreven het album als ‘muzikaal zeer overtuigend, warm en poëtisch’ en roemden het als ‘een bewonderenswaardig geslaagd huwelijk’.

Op NPO Klassiek werd Idylle omschreven als ‘buitengewoon rijke en emotionele muziek, met een sterke hang naar het transcendente’ en als ‘een persoonlijk en bijzonder album om naar te luisteren’.
Daan speelt veel muziek voor solo piano. Daarnaast streeft hij ernaar om zo vaak mogelijk met anderen samen te spelen, omdat er weinig dingen leuker zijn dan samen muziek maken. Als kamermusicus is hij actief met zijn viool-piano duo Verloop-Oostdam (www.verloopoostdam.nl) samen met violist Menno Verloop. Ook vormt hij een duo met cellist Simon Velthuis. In 2023 waren ze te gast bij NPO 4 om hun aankomende album te presenteren met werken van Bloch, Rachmaninoff, Chopin en Saint-Saens.
Daan haalt veel inspiratie uit de natuur. Als kind groeide hij op in een oude boerderij, en zijn ouders namen hem en zijn zus vaak mee naar de bergen. Tegenwoordig maakt hij elke zomer lange bergtochten. ‘Ik geloof dat de natuur geen esthetische fouten maakt. Vaak trek ik de bergen in of zoek het water op en altijd kom ik gelouterd terug. Lichter, als ik met een zwaar gemoed vertrok, geïnspireerd, als ik op een dood spoor zat. De natuur helpt me om te voelen wat belangrijk is.’
In 2023 werd Daan uitgenodigd om deel te nemen aan l’Academie Musicale de Villecroze. Hij volgde lessen bij muzikale grootheden als Avedis Kouyoumdjian, Alexandar Madzar, Lilya Zilberstein, en Jan Wijn dankzij de steun van muziekfonds Stringendo.
Daan vindt naast zijn ontwikkeling als pianist, veel inspiratie in het lesgeven. Sinds 2019 werkt hij als docent: ‘Ik wil mijn liefde voor muziek doorgeven, omdat ik weet hoe fijn het is om te ontdekken en te groeien in je eigen muzikaliteit. Die ontdekking en groei wil ik delen met mijn leerlingen’.
Wanneer hij niet achter de piano zit, vind je hem vaak buiten, op het water of op de tennisbaan, of bezig met het plannen van zijn volgende bergtocht.

In January 2025, his solo debut album Idylle was released on the 7 Mountain Records label, devoted entirely to the music of Nikolai Medtner. The CD received wide attention in the written press and on the radio and was praised as “a beautiful debut album, colorful and nuanced,” featuring “dynamic contrasts and romantic expressiveness.” Reviewers described the album as “musically highly convincing, warm, and poetic,” and hailed it as “an admirably successful marriage.”

Daan performs extensively as a solo pianist. In addition, he strives to collaborate with others as often as possible, as there are few things he enjoys more than making music together. As a chamber musician, he is active in the violin–piano duo Verloop-Oostdam (www.verloopoostdam.nl) with violinist Menno Verloop. He also forms a duo with cellist Simon Velthuis. In 2023, they appeared on NPO 4 to present their upcoming album featuring works by Bloch, Rachmaninoff, Chopin, and Saint-Saëns.
Daan draws much of his inspiration from nature. As a child, he grew up on an old farm, and his parents often took him and his sister to the mountains. Today, he embarks on long mountain hikes every summer. “I believe that nature makes no aesthetic mistakes. I often head into the mountains or seek out the water, and I always return cleansed—lighter if I left with a heavy heart, inspired if I had reached a dead end. Nature helps me feel what truly matters.”
In 2023, Daan was invited to participate in l’Académie Musicale de Villecroze, where he studied with musical luminaries such as Avedis Kouyoumdjian, Alexandar Madzar, Lilya Zilberstein, and Jan Wijn, with the support of the Stringendo Music Fund.
Alongside his development as a pianist, Daan finds great inspiration in teaching. Since 2019, he has worked as a piano teacher: “I want to pass on my love for music, because I know how wonderful it is to discover and grow in your own musicality. That process of discovery and growth is something I want to share with my students.”
When he is not at the piano, Daan can often be found outdoors—on the water, on the tennis court, or planning his next mountain trek.
